Puerto Princesa Mayor’s Cup Gets Underway
The Puerto Princesa Mayor’s Cup began on Monday starting with the elimination rounds. The 2-day event will take place at the Star Billiards Center in Quezon City and 64 billiard players will be in attendance.
The Billiards and Snooker Congress of thePhilippines are hosting the elimination rounds and fifteen professionals will be taking part in the opening rounds.
The cue stars participating in the first stages will be competing from China, Taiwan, Japan, Vietnam, and Latvia. China will be represented by their number one player, Li He-Wen, Junior champions Ko Pin-Yi and Liu Hui-Chan, and women’s champion Li Jia.
Some of the Filipino billiard stars who will be participating are Jeffrey de Luna, and Elvis Casalang, who was the winner of the 2007 Manny Pacquiao International Championship as well as becoming the Asian Games silver medalist. Other Filipino players are Raymond Faraon and Edgar Acaba.
The opening of the elimination rounds will see fifteen players battle it out for one of the thirteen places in the main tournament. The second stages will take place on June 22-24 in Palawan.
During the recent Mandaluyang Mayor’s cup, seventeen other billiard players have already made it through to the second stage of the Princesa Cup because of outstanding performances and recognition of their status as world champions.
Two places were immediately taken by Known star Ralf Souquet and Wu Chia-Ching, due to the fact that they are double world champions in 8-Ball and 9-Ball.
