Welsh born player, Terry Griffiths. Born on Oct 16th 1947 in Welsh town Llanelli, Griffiths became renowned for his remarkable achievements in the snooker world. He was especially recognised for his relaxed style and certainly didn’t rush his games. His precise decorum on the table served him well as he continued to win one championship after another.

The former Postman first earned his reputation by winning the Welsh Amateur Championship in 1975. Following that, he entered and won the English Amateur Championship in 1977-78 before turning pro.

Griffiths made an impact on the professional circuit by defeating Eddie Charlton in a lengthy semi-final in 1979, thus making his mark as a worthy contender in the snooker rankings. He became World Champion at his first attempt and won the prestigious Benson and Hedges Masters in 1980 by beating Alex Higgins 9-5. To add to his successful list of achievements in a short time, Griffiths gained the ‘Pot Black’ title in 1984 and the Welsh professional Championships between 85-86 and 1988.

Like any competitive sport, all good things must come to an end and the hard- to- defeat Welshman began to descend in the snooker rankings during the early 90’s. Terry lost the 1992 World Championships to young star, Stephen Hendry and his memorable defeat by Steve Davis at the Crucible in 1996 urged Griffiths to announce his retirement. His final professional match was against mark Williams in 1997 at the World famous Crucible and once again he lost.

Without being deterred after a string of losses the Welsh star continues to remain in the snooker profession. Terry can be regularly seen commentating for the BBC; however his main participation is coaching. Since retiring, Griffiths has coached top class players such as Stephen Hendry, Stephen Maguire, Mark Williams, Mark Allen and young star Marco Fu.

Terry offers a three day training course for those who wish to adopt his professional methods. The course offers technique, general advice, skills and strategies and setting and play. The majority of the course is run by Terry’s son Wayne who is a certified grade A Coach like his father. The course explains that Terry will be in attendance on at least one of the days. The course is held at Terry Griffith’s Matchroom in South Wales and graduates will leave with a certificate from the ‘Terry Griffith’s School of Coaching.’

There is no denying the achievements of Terry Griffiths. A former Welsh Amateur, who broke into the world of professional Snooker and won the most illustrious awards. With his highest break being 139, there isn’t any wonder why other prestigious players turn to him for coaching and advice.
